And at first I wasn't exactly sure what I was reading, but it was all about the CIA. So I was going to read it, of course. And

7:30 come to find out someone else had written an article about finding them themselves and it was crowley retired from the cia and stole a bunch of material so the material that he stole he had stored in some various places and over time he kept talking to trento on the phone

Well, then Crowley would go into his stash of documents and package them up and send them to a particular post office box, which Trento would go get. And the deal with Crowley had with Trento is you can't publish any of this until I die because they're all going to know it came from me. That's how well placed this guy was. And so.

8:29 Crowley and him, again, just morning, noon, and night, telephone call after telephone call, talking about all kinds of crazy stuff. And so Trento, true to his word, never published a single word of information. And they talked about JFK's assassination and all kinds of different things on these phone calls. And after he died, Trento published this book.

8:57 called Prelude to Terror. Now, the primary setting of this book is in the aftermath of the midnight raid on the CIA, where Jimmy Carter fired all those CIA agents. And the subtitle is The Rogue CIA and the Legacy of America's Private Intelligence Network.

9:24 So immediately when I got it, I had not even gotten through the introduction and I realized, holy crap, this is one of those rare books that ties all of the pieces that we have been discovering. I wish I'd have found this a lot earlier. This is definitely going to be in my top five books. I have not finished the book. I'm going to be honest with you. I've gotten far enough in the book to know that the majority of what's in here, with just a couple of caveats that I would add,

What we have uncovered is exactly that, where they have used the presence of an intelligence operation to take politics in business and conduct that business in politics under the guise of an intelligence agency.

Some honestly trying to serve the national interest, others focusing enormous energy on personal political advantage, even personal profit. According to William Corson, while he was an efficient

Klein was particularly useful to Shackley because he got along so well with the Cubans who worked for the CIA. We know them as Cuban exiles. The truth is, unlike Shackley, he was personally likable. Arms dealer, opium lords, dictators felt very comfortable around Tom Klein's. Said,

He had a knack for making important friends and making money. Together, Wilson and Shackley honed the techniques developed by the CIA paymaster Paul Helliwell in Asia to perfect the book's covert actions. And remember, Paul Helliwell was the military attaché assigned to Chiang Kai-shek.

With his old team from his days as the chief of station in Laos and Vietnam, Shackley would build a private, basically a private intel organization inside a government agency. Using Klein, his loyal deputy, Shackley would manipulate Wilson and eventually take over his businesses.

17:25 and Wilson as a result of Shackley stabbing him in the back ended up in prison. The pioneering work Wilson did in establishing business fronts would be taken to a new level as Shackley and his partners became the private intelligence service used by the 1980s Reagan-Bush campaign of their newly elected administration. The Wilson model of private businesses fueling intelligence operations would spread worldwide shortly after Wilson

17:53 had turned into a fugitive by Shackley and Shackley's partners. These activities would ultimately lead directly to the assassination of Anwar Sadat and provide the foundation for the Iran-Contra scandal, as well as the massive weapons buildup on both sides of the Iran-Iraq war. And we'll get into all of that. The first head of this private CIA was Shackley's old friend, Richard Helms.

In 1973, Helms, then the beloved CIA director, was fired by Richard Nixon and banished to ambassadorship in Iran as the Watergate scandal engulfed Washington. 18:50 the BCCI and its interface with the CIA because Richard Helms was involved in that as well. And as this book says, ends up as the ambassador to Iran, which is really interesting because the CIA basically installed the Shah there. So kind of one big happy family.

19:16 Shackley became Helms' inside man in Washington while he was in purgatory over in Iran. For the first time, the CIA was under public scrutiny and congressional scrutiny, and Helms and Shackley worked to protect the institution they had given their lives to. Due to Helms and Shackley's effort, in addition to the subsequent prodding and direction of CIA Director George H.W. Bush, as well as the Carter administration's action,

19:44 in stopping the talent spy satellite photography from going to the Israelis, the agency began to move towards Saudi Arabia as a prime Middle East intelligence partner. They turned the Sheikh Kamal Adem, head of Saudi's intelligence, and one of the most pro-Western and wealthy members of the Saudi family for help. And this Kamal Adem is front and center in the BCCI scandal.

20:13 Over the next several years, Adem and his nephew, Prince Turki bin Basel Al-Assad, would become very close to the CIA hierarchy. Out of these relationships grew a process by which the royal family would provide their personal friends at the top of the U.S. intelligence network with financial resources to conduct operations around the world without needing to inform Congress.

Richard Helms' embassy in Tehran became the center of the CIA with NSCIA from the years of 1973 to 1977. Oh my God, those are the first years of the Bank of BCCI. I'm sure that's just a coincidence.

22:06 When the legal problems caused Helm's ultimate downfall, Shackley inherited the leadership role. As Saudi Arabia successfully became Israel's replacement as the CIA's intelligence surrogate in the Middle East, the CIA provided information and technical capability to the Saudi intel services. The U.S. began increasingly to rely on foreign agents while curtailing the recruitment and training of its own.

In 1977, when the CIA's own front bank collapsed, the Saudis came to the rescue with the BCCI Bank, a small Pakistani converted, a small Pakistani bank converted by ADEM. 23:03 The Saudis were positioned to manage the shape and shape much of the Middle East intelligence created by the U.S. As a result, our ability to gather effective intelligence would begin to be compromised because we weren't generating our own. Early in his administration, Jimmy Carter and his new CIA director, Stanford Turner, initiated the first overhaul of the Directorate of Operations in the history of the CIA.

Segments of the Directorate of Operations led by Shackley essentially then began to pursue a strategy to operate independently of their own government. Bush as vice president and William Casey as the CIA director, the executive branch would

The agency's rogue elements had evolved significantly and had perfected and escalated the practices they had learned in Laos and Vietnam, turning themselves into a brotherhood loyal not to a constitution and not to a government, but to each other and their political supporters, which is the International Syndicate.

They created and formulated de facto policy while in the process making their own rules, rewarding themselves and friends and punishing their enemies. In addition, Corson and Crowley, just before their death, turned over to me their extensive files, along with the files they'd been keeping for their old friend Angleton. 27:50 The first chapter of the book is called Allen Dulles and Prescott Bush. Now, I went through and highlighted different segments, so obviously I'm not going to read the whole thing. I am going to read the most important parts of this so you can start to get a feel for the types of information that these guys shared with him because it's incredible. By the end of World War II, Prescott Bush.

28:17 The father of George H.W. Bush was a wealthy, well-established Wall Street investment banker. Not far from where he worked, a friend of his was doing something very illegal. That was Alan Dulles, who had been the famous Switzerland station chief of the OSS during World War II. He was now running a private intelligence service out of 4-4 Wall Street.

28:44 using some of the biggest names in American businesses. Dulles did it because he felt like he had to. This was a quote from Dulles. The Soviets were throwing everything they had at us. The KGB was eating us alive, and Washington could not make up its mind what it wanted to do with intelligence. Robert Crowley at the time was a former aide to Dulles in this secret organization.

29:14 This is the same Robert Crowley that goes to work for Dulles at the CIA that provided Joseph Trento all of this information. So he was with Dulles even before Dulles was CIA. And even before he was, well, during the time he was OSS. In Washington, a fight had broken out about who should run the intelligence services. And J. Edgar Hoover wanted to control.

29:43 Not just domestic intelligence, but he also wanted to control the overseas portion of it. Dulles did not wait while the politicians debated. The two years between the end of World War II and the creation of the CIA, Dulles had done business with Hitler's supporters before the war. He began a massive ex-Nazi recruitment campaign using the State Department's refugee office as a front. The enemy was now communism.

30:13 Anyone, no matter how unsavory, who was willing to oppose communism was going to be an ally and a friend to Allen Dulles. Dulles made sure that the investment bankers and lawyers who had done business in Germany before and even during the war were back in touch with their old German contacts because he was basically a lawyer for many of them, him and his brother.

30:37 In 1951, when he moved over to the new CIA, he brought with him a network and assets that he had recruited as a private citizen. His knowledge of how Hitler and the cronies had risen to power and the Americans who had financed that rise helped make recruiting in the post-war American business community a lot easier because he had blackmail on all of them. 31:03 that Crowley and a colleague ran an entire CIA office devoted solely to working with executives of major corporations, the International Syndicate Link. The hierarchy of the new CIA came largely from the Eastern establishment, men from quote-unquote good families who shared common values, which means no morals. The elite of American intelligence was recruited from a class of men who had not only done business with the country's enemies,

31:33 but had in some cases helped finance the rise to power. Mussolini, Hitler, and the Japanese had received help from Wall Street's biggest investment bankers. And of course, we went over that with Anthony Sutton's book. The best minds from the nation's best schools had pursued and put together these profitable deals through cutout banks and layers of corporations to hide the relationships. American soldiers had been killed with weapons paid for by these entities.

32:03 The families had for generations run and owned the bulk of American financial institutions, and they had much to say about who got elected and appointed into top government positions. These men were from Prescott Bush's social and economic class. They created the world of private clubs like the Century Club, an exclusive secret college organization like Skull and Bones. There you go, war hamster. And to help and protect each other.

32:32 What they did for a living was not the issue. The issue was that they shared the same social standings and values. These relationships are what had been loosely referred to over the years as the good old boy network. The old boy network was at the heart of the CIA and the OSS, its wartime predecessor. It was from this small community that Prescott Bush involved with intelligence grew.

32:58 After the war in Germany, U.S. forces had captured the banking documents held by the Nazis regarding Prescott Bush and Brown Brothers Harriman. These were far more detailed than the records the Justice Department had obtained during its banking investigation. By the time these records came into CIA hands, the file was damning, according to Crowley. Fortunately for Bush and his colleagues, their intimate, like CIA covert operation head,

As a consequence, the Bush and Harriman families were protected from any potential embarrassment if details of their financial collaboration with Hitler should become public. If the entire story got out, Prescott Bush's blooming political career would have been destroyed. But Dulles knew the whole story.

33:57 In the 1920s, Prescott Bush's father-in-law, George Herbert Walker, brought him into the Brown-Harriman investment empire like many other Americans. Prescott did investment work for bankers and industrialists who supported Adolf Hitler's rise to power. Many in what became the American intelligence establishment also had ties to the Nazi government.

34:24 Dulles himself sat on the board of a bank with direct ties to the Nazi regime. Richard Magara, the grandfather of another CIA director, Richard Helms, also had business links to Hitler. A number of the people who dealt with the Nazis became a dirty little secret among the banking community. Hal Prescott Bush became the American banker for Hitler's largest single industrial supporter in Germany.

34:50 Through an elaborate money laundering operation was exposed by the Office of Emergency Management between 42 and 51. The money was funneled through a Dutch bank. Warhamster just said there's a Dutch angle on every one of these banking scandals. A Dutch bank into the supposedly American-controlled Union Banking Corporation, UBC. The arrangement began with Bert Walker.

35:18 the grandfather, who was then president of W.A. Harriman and Company, Avril Harriman's investment company. In 1924, both companies, Harriman and UBC, operated out of the same office at 39 Broadway in Manhattan. In 26, Prescott Bush joined Harriman as vice president and was assigned to UBC. He oversaw all of the German operations from 26 to 42.

35:47 In 1931, W.A. Harriman and Company merged with the investment house of Brown Brothers. Bert Walker left the new firm and started his own, G.H. Walker and Company, while Prescott Bush remained with what was now Brown Brothers Harriman and was doing hands-on work for UBC in America. Though designed to appear to be controlled by the investment firm, UBC was in fact a front for numerous German nationals. For Bush,

36:17 For Bush, the most important person under his care was Fritz Thyssen, T-H-Y-S-S-E-N, who controlled the vast German steel trust. Bush looked after Thyssen's American interests, which were concealed through a Dutch bank controlled by the Germans. Thyssen was helping Hitler financially at the time Prescott Bush was overseeing Thyssen's American portfolio.

36:42 According to the government and Thyssen's family records, Thyssen contributed over a million and a half dollars, which was an astronomical amount in 1920 and 30s, to the Hitler Nazi Party. And just so that you guys know, this isn't a revelation to all of us, because in Antony Sutton's book that we went through quite a while ago, all of this information was shared during that as well. This is all 100% confirmed information.

37:11 These contributions were a major reason Hitler succeeded in his climb to power, according to members of the Theissen family. Bush did such a good job representing Theissen's interests that he was put on the UBC board of directors in 34. He and UBC remained in the old Harriman offices when Brown Brothers Harriman moved down the road to 59 Broadway. Along with UBC, Brown Brothers Harriman fronted several other firms deeply entangled in the Nazi web.

37:40 Burt Walker arranged for Harriman's interest to take control of the North American operations of the Hamburg America Line, calling it the American Shipping and Commerce Corporation. Several years after Walker took it over, in 1934, a congressional probe concluded that the Hamburg America Line was being used to subsidize a major Nazi propaganda effort in the United States. Despite those revelations, the Thyssen family

Yet another holding company controlled by Bush, Walker, and Harriman's interest owned a major portion of a Siliens American Corporation, which was a holding company that invested in German-controlled steelmaking and mining concerns. They were used to build Hitler's war machine. This operation was run out of G.H. Walker and Company. By 1942,

A managing partner at Brown Brother Harriman, he also sat on the boards of CBS, Pan Am, Prudential Insurance, Drescher Industries, and the United States Guarantee Corporation. And we know and have confirmed as part of our research that both Pan Am and CBS eventually become arms of the CIA.

39:08 Ironically, in 1942, Bush, Prescott Bush, was named the national campaign chairman of the United Service Organization, USO. In the next year, he raised $33 million for the USO to provide entertainment for troops fighting the Nazis. He was publicly praised for his efforts on behalf of the country's fighting men.

39:31 But at the same time, the Roosevelt administration had moved to end Brown Brothers' efforts on behalf of the Nazis. Under the authority of the Trading with the Enemies Act, President Roosevelt personally approved an investigation into UBC. The alien property custodian issued a vesting order, which detailed how UBC and other entities operated by Bush, Walker, and Harriman families had helped the Nazis.
