I just thought it was interesting timing when all of this was going on because the world was taken, well, the U.S. was taken off the gold standard at about the same time that Marcos, the CIA, and Japan came back to the Philippines and began discovering gold.

So Marcos decided to bring in a psychic and a mining expert in order to basically reverse engineer Ben's maps. The psychic could determine.

So he really needed someone that was a metal expert to step in. So in the past, he had been selling the gold to the Japanese and the CIA kind of on the black market, which again, got him a lot less money for it. So he was wanting to change the operational style so he could maximize his profit.

If he was going to bypass the CIA and Japanese and sell the gold on the world market, it had to be physically altered. This process is called sanctifying to conform to London gold standards. A member of the gold cartel would only do this for him at a deep discount.

One possibility was a mining expert in Nevada called Robert Curtis. In his work with NASA, Johnson met a U.S. Air Force colonel who asked him to come to the Philippines to check out treasure site on Clark Air Base. While Johnson was a guest at Clark, word got around that Colonel Velicruz came to see him.

Starting out as a banker in San Francisco, he was fascinated with silver and gold along the California-Nevada border. He had built a factory in Sparks where he reprocessed ore and developed new techniques to extract more gold.

Most people did not know that there was platinum to be mined in America because the gold cartel discouraged hunting for platinum in order to control quantities and prices of the metal from their own bids in Africa. But Curtis independently developed a process to extract platinum from the ore he was recovering in the Sierras.

This made him a modestly wealthy man. Norman Curtis asked Bob Curtis, Robert Curtis, if he could fly out to Manila to discuss setting up a refinery for President Marcos. He explained that Marcos wanted Curtis to smelt gold bars, change the hallmarks to Filipino official numbers and stamps.

and alter chemical composition of the gold so that it would appear to have come from Filipino mines. What was staggering to Curtis was the amount of gold mentioned. Historically, there was no way to account for so much gold coming from Filipino mines. In 1939, those mines produced the greatest quantity ever, 1 million troy ounces, or just over 31 metric tons. In the 1970s, the Filipino was only producing 22 metric tons of gold a year. Because gold mine operations in the islands were sluggish and inefficient, it would be difficult to explain a sudden tenfold jump.

Marcus could dip small quantities into markets over a period of time. If it was sanctified, he could sell them readily to private buyers. After turning Curtis down several times, Curtis changed his mind when he got a long letter from him in February 1975, revealing that the source of gold was Japanese loot. And I just for anybody that's joined us later, every mine is booby trapped. They have cyanide poisoning and little glass fragile bottles so that if you are not digging around that, you will break it.

And it will kill you. They have booby traps where they put this real fine sand so that things will cave in on you. It is very dangerous. And the codes to avoid all of the booby traps that they put in there, there's explosives in there, is on these maps in a coded form. Curtis recalls that he was incredulous.
