Calvera immediately organized his column to march towards Havana. The force left at dusk and drove on through the night. They arrived at the capital the next morning and went directly to the fortress, whose garrison of 15,000 men dwarfed in the small M26 column. The M26 Comandante walked up to the iron drawbridge and shouted, I'm Che Calvera. I want to talk to your chief.

A few minutes later, a government chief came out and crossed the bridge. The occupant was an army major, unholstered his pistol and handed it to Che Guevara. We are not interested in fighting. It is not necessary now because the dictator was gone. Throughout his time in power, the U.S. backed Batista. The change in government on the 2nd of July 1959 brought a new beginning for the Cubans, but also a new opportunity for Washington in its relationship with Havana.

Those were his words. Fidel visited Washington in April to give a speech. He did not meet Eisenhower, but he spoke with State Department officials and had a three-hour discussion with Nixon, which you know is bad news because that's the exact same way they treated Lumumba. Secretary of State Harder, H-E-R-T-E-R, was putting the finishing touches on a memorandum he sent to Eisenhower the very same day, November 5th. The paper contained four recommendations, far more forceful actions on Cuba. They included doing nothing to assist Castro's consolidation of power, a propaganda campaign in Latin America to promote the U.S. conception of democracy, which is a dictatorship.

One week later, Alan Dulles received a memorandum from the chief of the DDP Western Hemisphere Division, Joseph Caldwell King, which insisted Castro's, wait for it, far left dictatorship could not be permitted to stand because it could encourage expropriations of American property and other Latin countries.
